BMW’s And AWOL Afghan Soldiers–What’s Next?

In an interesting choice of words, Fox News has run a story explaining how the AWOL Afghan soldiers have been “escaping” Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas – with BMW’s.  No, not the vehicle.

Described as  “A loose network of Mexican-American women,” the BMW’s (Big Mexican Women) “some of whom may be illegal immigrants, have been responsible for helping numerous Afghan military deserters go AWOL from an Air Force Base in Texas”

Essentially, these Mexican-American, possible illegal immigrants, are acting as chauffeurs to the Afghan soldiers, helping them to jump the base fence in the middle of the night, offering them advice on how to roll through the US without legal papers, and how to stay off the radar.  The soldiers are meeting these BMWs at local clubs, and presumably, are being “informed” of their option to desert.  This according to an anonymous diplomatic official’s claims, which are supported by a source at the Defense Language Institute (DLI), who also requested anonymity. The BMW’s are in many cases girlfriends of the young Afghan’s.

In a cyclical and frustrating search for more answers, Fox was told first by the DOD (Department of Defense)  to contact ICE (Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement) for more information on the efforts to track down these Afghan soldiers – and then ICE referred back to the DOD. And the DOD back to ICE.  Clearly, we’re getting more of that “transparency” we were promised.

Fox is reporting that no less than 46 such cases have been confirmed – and the deserters are still AWOL.
